I was in the playtest for this source. The Terran Civil War is much like the United States Civil War, just in space. With over 50 star systems and each side starting with dozens of ships it is bigger than most campaigns. It is the depth of this source that is most attractive to me.
The rules for the breakdown of the rule of law as the war progresses makes this a much different game than others I have played in. This is simulated with a gradual increase in pirate activity which forces players to cover every system to prevent morale drops from pirate attacks.
The other big difference is that attacks on certain systems, core worlds for the League and Slave systems for the Covenant cause massive morale drops. Each victory or defeat can also affect morale. This means that how you affect your opponents morale in a negative way and your own in a positive way will win the war. Winning battles is important, building ships is important, but protecting yourself from negative morale checks is the most important.
In the playtest the Covenant won by breaking through and attacking "core worlds", forcing morale checks for the League. As planets morale dropped the EP the League was collecting dropped also, crippling their ability to prosecute the war to the point that they were forced to sue for peace.
